Dr Steffan Thomas is a Senior Lecturer in Digital Marketing at Bangor Albert Gubay Business School, part of Bangor University in beautiful North Wales. As he explains, the Business School offers more than just academic excellence; it offers community, opportunity, and inspiration.

“The unique thing about Bangor University is the community we’ve got here,” he says. “We’re a relatively small university, so it’s a really friendly and safe environment.”

A Stunning Location for Business Students

Bangor’s setting is often one of the first things that captures students’ hearts. “We’re in an incredible place,” Steffan says. “The sea is right in front of the Business School, and the mountains are behind us. It’s a safe, scenic place to live and study.”

The university’s location in North Wales creates a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere that helps students from across the world settle in quickly. “It’s a vibrant international community,” Steffan explains. “And because Bangor is a bilingual university, with Welsh spoken widely, our staff are used to thinking bilingually. That’s a valuable experience for international students joining us.”

What You’ll Learn in a Digital Marketing Degree

Business and marketing are constantly evolving, and Bangor’s courses evolve with them. “All business subjects are dynamic,” says Steffan. “The economy, politics, geography, technology — they all change how we do business. So we make sure our curriculum keeps up.”

As the Director of Teaching and Learning, he ensures that Bangor’s courses stay current. “We regularly review our programmes to include the most contemporary thinking so that students graduate ready for the real world.”

How Bangor University Prepares Students for the Future of Work

Artificial intelligence and digital transformation are reshaping the job market, and Bangor is preparing students for that future. “There’s no point pretending AI doesn’t exist,” says Steffan. “It’s changing the workplace, so we’re making sure our students are digitally competent and confident using new tools.”

The Business School is introducing more digital and AI-related learning across modules, helping students develop the technical and creative skills employers now demand. “It’s not a threat,” Steffan adds. “It’s an exciting opportunity.”

Student Life at Albert Gubay Business School

Bangor’s Albert Gubay Business School isn’t just a place to learn — it’s a community. Steffan loves seeing students grow during their time there. “I really enjoy watching the transformation,” he says. “Students arrive a bit shy and quiet, and by their final year, they’ve gained so much confidence. It’s amazing to see them graduate and start their careers.”

Many former students stay in touch, returning to share their experiences through guest lectures. “That’s what it’s all about,” he says. “Seeing them succeed and then inspire the next generation.”

Authentic Learning and Real-World Experience

Bangor’s new Albert Gubay Business School building, due for completion in 2027, will feature modern digital classrooms and state-of-the-art facilities designed to reflect how business is done today.

“Our curriculum is authentic,” says Steffan. “We focus on assessments that prepare students for the workplace. Alongside traditional exams, students produce reports, presentations, and posters, and even take part in conference-style projects. It means they can walk into a job interview and say, ‘I’ve already done this.’”

Life in Bangor: Study by the Sea

When Steffan needs a break, he often heads to one of Bangor’s most peaceful spots. “There’s a park just opposite the Albert Gubay Business School that leads straight to the waterfront,” he says. “At lunchtime, I can wander down and be by the sea — that’s my happy place.”

It’s this balance of natural beauty, academic excellence, and supportive community that makes Bangor such a special place to study.
