When Elia from Iran began looking for a university, she wanted one that valued international students and provided both academic and personal support. After researching her options, she chose London Metropolitan University, where she is now studying for her Master’s in Human Nutrition. “When I was searching for universities, I was looking for a university that really values international students in both academic and personal support,” she explains. “London Met has exceeded my expectations.”

London Metropolitan University is based in London, with campuses in and near the city centre.

Experiencing London’s Diversity

Elia’s move from Iran to London opened up a completely new world. “Because I came from a country that doesn’t have much cultural diversity, I was really interested in how diverse London is,” she says. “You can meet people from different cultures and learn about them.”

Settling in wasn’t easy at first. “Not at first, but thankfully, London Met helped me a lot,” she recalls. “The International Office and the different societies helped me to make new friends.” She eventually created her own Persian Society, which helped her connect with others from her culture. “That was really helpful and made me feel more at home.”

London Met prides itself on the diversity of its students.

Support for International Students

Elia highlights the strong support she’s received throughout her studies. “Starting as an international student with a second language can feel overwhelming,” she says. “London Met has really supported me in this situation. It has very kind and supportive lecturers who always encourage you to think critically and find your own research interests.”

She also praises the mentoring available to help students adjust academically. “They encourage you with different mentors who can help you in your courses and modules, to go through your assignments and exams,” she explains.

Elia created her own society at London Met, which helped her meet more students and connect with them.

When asked what she likes most about studying at London Met, Elia doesn’t hesitate. “The thing I like most here is how everyone — every student and every staff member — is so kind and supportive,” she says. “The lecturers are very knowledgeable and always encourage you to be better and find your true value. London Met has become my second home, and I really love it here.”

Life Beyond the Classroom

Outside her studies, Elia enjoys exploring the city. “I’m really keen to explore the city and meet new people,” she says. “That’s why I really enjoy London. You have so many places to explore: markets, cafés, museums, art galleries, and very historical things.”

The British Museum is a must-see highlight of London.

Reflecting on her journey, Elia admits that moving abroad was nerve-wracking at first. “When I wanted to come here, I was really panicked and stressed,” she says. “I kept overthinking — how should I pass the modules, find friends, find a home, and settle down?”

But with time, she learned an important lesson. “I wish I knew that everything goes with the flow, and there’s no need to be stressed or panicked,” she says. “If you’re an international student, I would recommend you to go for it. It will shape you, and it’s going to be a wonderful chapter of your life.”
