Glory on why to study Computer Science at Bangor

Glory, originally from Nigeria, is pursuing his PhD in Computer Science at Bangor University in Wales. His journey began when he was looking for a master’s programme that would prepare him for a future in artificial intelligence and data science.

“I looked up universities in the UK, and Bangor stood out because of its strong research focus in computer science,” he says. “The modules were exactly what I wanted, and the tuition was very affordable. I even received a £3,000 scholarship for international students, which made a big difference.”

After completing his master’s degree, Glory decided to stay on for his PhD. “I loved my first year here,” he says. “The people were amazing, the area reminded me a lot of where I studied in Mauritius Island, and the community made me feel welcome.”

He credits the academic staff for making Bangor such a supportive place to study. “The lecturers are really great,” he explains. “They give you a sense of belonging and push you to do your best. It’s more than just classroom teaching, you feel part of a family.”

PhD Research in Artificial Intelligence and Legal Technology

Glory’s current research focuses on artificial intelligence tools for the legal sector. “I develop AI systems that can support legal services,” he says. “It’s about making technology work for people, helping to make justice more accessible through digital innovation.”

His passion for combining computer science and social impact has already led to impressive results. During his studies, Glory has collaborated with the Law Society and other institutions on projects that use data and technology to improve legal access.

As an international student himself, Glory understands the challenges of moving abroad, but he says Bangor offers outstanding support. “We have an international support team that helps with everything from visas and accommodation to funding,” he explains.

“I had a few issues when I first arrived, and they were always there to help. Now I’m actually part of the team, helping other students settle in.”

He also praises the Students’ Union, which helps with language support, social activities, and general wellbeing. “They make sure international students never feel alone,” he says.

Life Beyond the Lab: Sport, Nature and Community

When he’s not researching or teaching, Glory enjoys exploring Bangor’s natural surroundings. “I love being close to the ocean and the mountains,” he says. “The scenery here is incredible.”

He also stays active. “I’m a sports person,” he adds. “I love the gym and I do judo. I used to play football, but now I’m training for men’s physique competitions.”

Outside of sport, he spends time with friends, enjoys video games like Call of Duty, and loves playing with his three kittens. He also sometimes relaxes by playing the piano in one of the university’s older buildings. ‘Bangor’s architecture is beautiful,’ he says. ‘When I first walked into one of the buildings, it felt like stepping into a Harry Potter film.

Academic Achievements at Bangor University

Glory has achieved remarkable academic success during his time at Bangor. “In one of my machine learning modules, I finished with a final average of 100,” he says.

He also collaborated with Professor Jonathan on a project exploring information visualisation and extended reality, resulting in two published papers — a rare accomplishment at the master’s level. “I was surprised and proud,” he admits. “Those projects gave me the confidence to keep pursuing research.”

Recent Projects and Future Goals

The past few months have been especially exciting for Glory.

“The past few months have been really busy but exciting,” he says. “I’ve been working on projects that explore how AI and digital tools can make legal help easier to access for everyone. One of my papers was accepted for presentation at a conference in Vienna, which I’m really looking forward to. Another big highlight was seeing our report published on the UK Parliament Committee website and quoted by the Law Society — that was such a proud moment for me and my team at Bangor.

For me, these projects mean a lot because they show that our research can actually make a difference in real life. Looking ahead, I just want to keep learning, growing, and using my work to help make the justice system fairer and more accessible to people who need it.”

They make sure you’re okay, help you grow, and push you to succeed. I’ve studied in other places, but the support at Bangor is unmatched.”
