Sofia from Ukraine is studying for her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Bangor University in Wales. She first discovered Bangor while browsing through UCAS listings and was drawn to its location.
“I looked at a lot of universities — Lincoln, Bristol — but I chose Bangor because of its location,” she says. “It’s very green, surrounded by nature and trees. I really liked that.”
Sofia describes Bangor as a friendly, lively city where there’s always something to do. “There are quite a lot of clubs and societies,” she explains. “Not just for drinking or partying, but for different interests.”
She joined the Horror Club because she enjoys spooky films and stories. “I also like sports, like tennis,” she adds. “Those are probably my two favourites.”

Outside of campus, Sofia loves exploring North Wales. “If you have a car or use the bus, there’s a lot to see around — Snowdonia, Anglesey — it’s very beautiful,” she says.
When it comes to her course, Sofia enjoys the variety of topics and how well-organised the learning system is. “I like how the Blackboard site works — it helps so much with navigation and has all the information you need,” she says.
Her favourite subject so far has been Biological Psychology, even though it was challenging. “It was hard, but I liked the challenge,” she says. “You learn so much about the brain and how different chemicals work in it.”
One of her proudest moments was passing the exam for that module. “I thought I completely failed,” she admits, “but somehow I got a good mark. It was stressful, but I learned a lot.”
Although she hasn’t yet been to Snowdonia, Sofia plans to go this year with friends. “I did go to Anglesey, London, Liverpool, Manchester, and Chester,” she says. “Bangor itself has beautiful places too, with a little forest nearby.”

Her curiosity and love of travel make her time in North Wales all the more rewarding.
After completing her degree, Sofia plans to continue her studies. “I’m looking to do a master’s in Liverpool and then a doctorate in Bologna, Italy,” she says.
A true linguist, Sofia already speaks Ukrainian, English, and Italian, and is learning German and possibly Spanish next. “I like the sound of German,” she says. “And Spanish is similar to Italian, so it’ll be easier to learn.”
