Rahul on Psychology, Friendship, and Finding Confidence at Bangor

By: Rahul Kumar | Posted: October 24, 2025 | Category: Student Stories

Rahul, from Nepal, is studying for his BSc in Psychology at Bangor University, a place that, for him, feels like a blend of home and discovery. “It’s similar to Nepal — mountains on one side, the sea on the other,” he says. “A beautiful, small place where you can walk almost anywhere.”

Choosing Bangor

When researching universities, Rahul was drawn to Bangor’s psychology programme for its hands-on opportunities. “They even have real human brains in the lab,” he says, laughing. “You can see them, touch them. It’s incredible. And they have new MRI machines for students who love research.” He also found Bangor affordable and student-friendly. “Accommodation is guaranteed, and you can choose something within your budget. Even local shops aren’t expensive.”

What surprised Rahul most was how easy it was to make friends. “If you join clubs and societies, you’ll meet people with the same interests,” he explains. “I watch anime. There’s even an anime club!” With more than 150 student societies, he says, there’s something for everyone. “You just have to speak — that’s the key.”

Menai Bridge is a 10-minute drive or a 30-minute walk from the town of Bangor.

Confidence and Growth

Studying psychology hasn’t just taught Rahul about the mind. It’s helped him understand himself, too. “Bangor helped me become more confident,” he says. “There’s even a public speaking workshop that teaches you how to present, how to communicate, how to be yourself.”

After completing his degree, Rahul hopes to continue into a master’s and eventually work in his field. For now, he’s focused on enjoying student life, learning, exploring, and helping other international students as part of the university’s support team. “My dream is simple,” he says. “To be happy doing something I love.”
