Studying BA (Hons) Design for Film at IADT Ireland: Jana's Experience
Moving from Mexico to Ireland was a big step for Jana, but she quickly discovered that the BA (Hons) Design for Film programme at the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) was the right fit for her creative ambitions.
"I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do. I wanted to try everything out, and I had the option to do that at IADT."
Unlike many courses that require students to specialise immediately, the first year of the programme introduces students to a range of disciplines, including makeup, costume design, prop making and production design before they choose a specialism.
Learning Special Effects Makeup and Prosthetics

Jana is specialising in makeup character design and has already had the opportunity to explore exciting industry techniques. Her studies focus on creating characters for film and television through makeup, prosthetics and special effects.
"We had a try-out for a prosthetic application. We learned how to apply it and put a little bit of blood and paint over it. That was really exciting."
The course is highly practical, allowing students to develop their skills through hands-on projects rather than traditional lectures. Jana enjoys being able to learn by doing and appreciates the freedom to continue experimenting and improving her techniques outside of class.
"It's mostly practice. You learn through doing and through seeing."
Industry Connections and Real-World Experience

Jana poses with a project she has made at IADT.
One of the things Jana appreciates most about IADT is the close relationship between lecturers and the film industry. Many of her tutors continue to work professionally, giving students valuable insight into what life is really like on film sets and in creative industries.
"We have a lot of help from the teachers, not only in classes but also afterwards. They incorporate us into work because they are continuing to work in the industry."
Students are encouraged to get involved in projects from an early stage, whether through college productions or collaborations with fellow students. Jana has already seen classmates gain experience working on short films and creative projects, helping them build their portfolios while still studying.
Finding a Creative Community at IADT

For Jana, one of the most rewarding aspects of studying at IADT has been meeting people who share her interests and creative ambitions. Coming from a place where careers in the arts were often viewed negatively, she found it refreshing to be surrounded by students who are passionate about film, design and storytelling.
"I made a lot of friends that I feel like I've known for a long time, but it's just been this year."
She describes the atmosphere on the course as welcoming and supportive, with students helping one another and forming strong friendships. Being surrounded by like-minded people has made her transition to life in Ireland much easier.
"Everybody got along really quickly and it was really easy to socialise here."
Why IADT Was the Right Choice

Looking back on her first year, Jana is confident she made the right decision to study at IADT. The opportunity to explore different creative disciplines, learn practical skills and connect with industry professionals has reinforced her passion for film design.
"I'm really enjoying it, and I think I made the right choice by coming here."
For students interested in film, television and creative design, Jana believes IADT offers a unique environment where they can discover their strengths, gain practical experience and prepare for a career in the industry. With four years of study ahead of her, she is excited to continue developing her skills and taking part in even more creative projects.
