Choosing to study abroad is a big decision, and for Yvonne, moving from Nigeria to Ireland to study a Bachelor of Business in Human Resource Management at South East Technological University (SETU) turned out to be a very positive experience. From the academic environment to student life, she found SETU to be a place where learning feels both supported and enjoyable.

One of the first things that stood out to her was the atmosphere on campus. She describes it as warm, welcoming, and genuinely focused on helping students succeed, which made settling in much easier.

Student and Lecturer Relationship at SETU

For Yvonne, the student–lecturer relationship is one of the strongest aspects of studying at SETU. She explains that the environment feels open and supportive, making it easy to ask questions and engage in class without feeling intimidated.

“I love the fact that they take their time to explain things,” she says. She also appreciates that classes are not overcrowded, which allows lecturers to get to know students by name. This creates a stronger connection and makes learning more personal and effective.

What Is the Human Resource Management Course Like at SETU?

Yvonne speaks very positively about her Human Resource Management course, saying she loved almost everything about it. The structure of the programme allowed her to explore different areas of business while building a strong foundation in HR-related subjects.

She highlights how relaxed the learning environment is, with no such thing as a “stupid question.” This made it easier for her to fully understand the material and feel confident in her studies.

Dissertation Experience in Business and Human Resource Management

One of Yvonne’s proudest academic achievements was her dissertation. She credits much of her success to the support of her supervisor, who was always available to answer questions and provide guidance.

Her dissertation focused on the benefits and drawbacks of information technology in modern recruitment compared to traditional recruitment methods. With consistent effort and strong supervision, she achieved an A grade, something she is extremely proud of.

International Student Support at SETU

As an international student, Yvonne found the level of support at SETU to be exceptional, particularly from the International Office. She describes them as friendly, approachable, and always willing to help.

“They [the International Office] are very warm and welcoming,” she explains, adding that asking for help feels more like talking to a friend than dealing with an office. This support played a big role in helping her feel comfortable and confident throughout her studies.

International Day on the Carlow campus brought a crowd of students together.

Yvonne strongly believes that SETU is a place where all students can thrive, regardless of background. She feels the environment encourages personal growth, skill development, and self-improvement.

“It has a very nice environment for you to study and learn and upskill,” she says, making it a good fit for students who want to develop both academically and personally.

Campus Facilities and Student Life at SETU

SETU’s campus facilities also left a strong impression on Yvonne. She describes the campus as modern, compact, and easy to navigate, with buildings only a short walk apart.

One facility she particularly enjoys is the sensory pod in the library, which allows students to relax and unwind after studying. With access to platforms like YouTube and Netflix, it offers a quiet space to recharge during busy academic periods.

Yvonne talks more about the sensory pod in the video at the end of the article.

Favourite Modules in Business and Human Resource Management

When it comes to modules, Yvonne has a clear favourite. She enjoys economics, particularly microeconomics, and praises her lecturer for making the subject engaging and easy to understand.

She also has a strong interest in psychology, which she finds fascinating due to its focus on how the human mind works. Both subjects complemented her HR studies and helped broaden her understanding of people and organisations.

Yvonne loves how compact and modern the campus is.

Life in Ireland as an International Student

One thing that surprised Yvonne about Ireland was how much Christmas is celebrated. She loved the festive decorations and the atmosphere during the holiday season, describing it as beautiful and memorable.

Outside of her studies, Yvonne enjoys singing, listening to music, watching movies, and taking part in cultural events. She even performed at the African Society Christmas party, which she describes as a lovely experience.
